| ? | Why our modem designs use a full RS-232 transceiver IC as opposed to taking power and logic from serial port? |
| A | The simple answer is: A RS-232 transceiver IC will gaurantee to satisfy the signal level requirements of the serial port on your machine. We have seen some PC's that would not tollerate the half swing (0 to +12v only) or grey level (approx -5 to +5 volts (a questionable state change)) on incoming data. We have only seen the 'rob the serial port' concept for packet type modems where data polarity is unimportant as there is no right side up or upside down in packet. However there is polarity in RTTY, PACTOR, AMTOR, and other similar modes, where true state changes on the serial port are needed. |

you have a floppy disk drive you can make a bootable DOS disk and place
Hamcomm, Baycom, AN-93 and the like all one one disk, and still have free
disk space! |
