 My AEA CP-1 Modified
The inside of my enhanced CP-1

The added board at the bottom left is the XR-2211 decoder for better packet decoding. A worthwhile mod if you are big into packet.

The added board in the upper right (foil side up) is the TTL to RS-232 level converter board. A necessity when I switched from a C=64 to an IBM clone.

The white square thing in the upper left is an audio transformer, bought from Radio Shack, wrapped in heat shrink . I no longer have to turn the volume up so high from my radio just to drive the CP-1.

 AEA CP-1 RS-232 Option
RS-232 factory installed    A CP-1 lacking RS-232 ability
(Left) A rare find, an AEA CP-1 with the TTL to RS-232 level conversion installed from the factory!

(Right) How to really tell if the RS-232 option has or has not been installed...Some of the CP-1's may have the DB-25 (J7) installed but the parts to translate TTL to RS-232 are absent as indicated here. The missing parts are U12, U13, Q12, D29, R99, R100, R121-R124, and the DB-25.

Home Brew RS-232 for the CP-1
This CP-1 has been modified for RS-232 using a Maxim MAX202E IC. Shown here, DIP headers have been inserted into the level conversion sockets in addition to jumpers added, and the DB-25 connector, mounted pins up on the back. See notes on the CP-1 page. RS-232 added using MAX202 transceiver IC

300 Baud Demodulator Added for Better Packet Decoding
Built from parts just laying around, A 300 baud demodulator was constructed for better Packet reception.

A demodulator select switch and data lock L.E.D. have been added to the front of the CP-1. The switch toggles between the XR-2211 and CP-1 demodulator circuit. The L.E.D. lights up when locked onto the desired tone. (crude tuning)

If you align the XR2211 to the same mark tone as the CP-1's you can use the L.E.D. bargraph or Oscilloscope for the XR2211 packet demodulator tuning as well!
XR2211 chip for serious 300 baud packet users!
